MARTHA LILE LOVE AWARD

FOR EXCELLENCE IN TEACHING

2014

The 2014 winner of the Martha Lile Love Award for Excellence in Teaching Philosophy, chosen from among graduate instructors who taught courses on any of the three University of Toronto campuses between September 2013 and August 2014, is

Daniel Hooley
for his PHL283H5S Bioethics, UTM, Summer 2014

The Martha Lile Love Committee was impressed by Daniel Hooley’s thoughtful course design and his use of scaffolding assignments to improve the ability of students to write philosophical essays. Hooley started his course with a unit devoted to “the bioethics of everyday life” in order to capture his students’ attention before moving on to the issues of professional ethics and public policy.

The selection committee also awards honorable mention to Alessandro Bonello (PHL 382 H1S, Death & Dying, SG, Summer 2014) and Dave Suarez (PHL 217 H1S, Introduction to Continental Philosophy, SG, Summer 2014) for their exceptional work.

Finally, the Department extends its appreciation to all Graduate Instructors for their excellent work during the past year, as well as Faculty Teaching Mentors for their invaluable advice and classroom observations.
